Whether your team is shooting a free throw or trying to get the rebound your cheerleaders should be doing something. If they are shooting, do something simple so it doesn’t take away from your boys. If they are getting the rebound then go into a  formation, lift, mount or some type of pyramid. Mix it up. Here we are yelling for them to get the rebound.

P.S. For cool formation ideas check out the category of mounts.

Paying for Spirit Week

We all know that spirit week can be costly. So to help defray the cost the cheerleaders put on a hot lunch for the students. Hot lunches are a special treat at our school so for your school if they are a regular occurrence then it might not work. We normally just serve Pizza.

We wear our cheerleading uniforms to school every time we have a home game that night.

“Decking the Halls” for Spirit Week

Every year for spirit week we always decorate the school with balloons, streamers, posters, and all sorts of crazy blue and white things (our school colors). It gets the students pepped up about the week.

Each one of our cheerleaders was given a wall to decorate in our school. This was my wall. I took pictures from each team’s season and posted them up, the words by the megaphone is a phrase from one of our cheers (you can find it on the bottom of this post). One of the girls had little cut out basketballs with the boy’s numbers and names in them and then had a wall title of “who shakes the court”. Another girl had blue megaphones with all of the cheerleader’s names in them. It was fun to see who could get the most creative. I think the students were impressed at some of the things we did. Make sure you have posters up listing all of the themes for each day; it gets a lot more people involved if they know what is going on each day.

Stomp your feet and listed to the beat of the mighty mighty cougars walking down the street! Were having lots of fun and won’t stop till we’re done, so listen up! We’re number one!

Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death!

We incorporated a liberty into the end of one of our hello cheers for half time. In the picture you only see half of the girls but we were doing the exact same thing on the other side. You can switch things up to suit your squad better. If you have little bit heftier girls you can make the bases go into a lunge instead of getting on their knees. This is how we originally started out doing the lunge but we found it a lot easier to go to our knees instead. If the flyer puts her leg up closest to the base then it helps with balance. If they have a hard time staying up then place another girl next to them, (like in the picture) then instead of having her right arm on her hips it can be at the flyers waist.

P.S. See the hair ribbon? I told you it was super cute! (April 3rd post)

Fundraising Idea

img_1177.jpg

Langs Auto is a BIG supporter of ours and this year to show our gratitude we decided to support them for a change. So for one of our games instead of wearing our cheerleading vests we wore their company shirts and hats. We put up posters to promote the business. They gave us extra shirts to throw out to the crowd. They loved it. This would be a good fundraiser or a cool Spirit week idea. Tell a company that you will promote their business if they will make a donation to your squad.

J-U-M-P
Get On Up and Jump

You clap when you say the letters and then we usually start with low touchdowns (get), to daggers (on up), to high touchdowns (jump).

If you add a jump at the end with every one going at the same time it makes is a little more peppy!

Some Girls Won’t be Caught Dead……

…wearing hair ribbon. But then there are those girls who won’t leave the house without it. This was the first year (2008) that our squad was required to wear it to every game. While it is a hassle at times I think it was well worth it. It makes the squad look sharp and unified, and it is super cute……if you wear it right. I’m not into the whole “make the bow bigger then my head” type of ribbon. I found this site that is really helpful for making ribbon, cute and cheap.

I did not post this video because I thought it was funny!!! I have never seen a toss done like this before. Watch the bases hands and see how they are intertwined. It seems like it would be a ton easier to toss the flyer like that.

Parent/Alumni Game

parent-alumni-collage-copy.jpg

Every year we host what we call our Parent/Alumni Game. Since we have a volleyball team and a basket ball team, both teams play that night. The past graduates (alumni) and the parents of the players come out and challenge the teams. Normally the volleyball games are co-ed and the basketball game is just for men. This is a great time to promote school fundraisers and maybe have a few other things out to raise some money such as having a bake sale and whatnot. Here at PBS it is normally our first game of the season, or if we need another home game for spirit week.  It is a great way to raise money, get the families of the church and school involved, and catch up with all of the past graduates. Advertising the night is key!!!!

Need a Cool and Easy Cheerleading Fundraiser?

cheer-college.jpg

This year my squad had what we call a cheerleading clinic. We brought in all of the elementary girls who were too young to be on the cheerleading squad and we taught them our cheers (the easy ones). For just $5 these “wanna be” cheerleaders got the opportunity to cheer with us the first half, and half time of our Parent Alumni game (parents/alumni vs the teams) These girls just loved it. We started out “cheerleading practice” with them just as we did normally. Then we broke them up into two groups to teach them the sideline cheers one on one. We taught them time out cheers, quarter cheers and a half time cheer. We ended practice with putting up the little girls in our mounts including an extension prep (4 person lift). For the little girls “uniform” they used their P.E. clothes.
