Just Some History…….

jcampbell.jpgDid you know that cheerleading was started by a man? Johnny Campbell, an undergraduate at the University of Minnesota, was the one who stood before the crowd at a football game and directed them in a famous and still used chant, “Rah, Rah, Rah! Sku-u-mar, Hoo-Rah! Hoo-Rah! Varsity! Varsity! Varsity, Minn-e-So-Tah!” So the next football season, November 2, 1898 started what we know today as the sport of cheerleading. Up until the Second World War almost all cheerleaders were male. When our men left to fight, the percentage of female cheerleaders went up to 90%. The known cheerleaders of today are accomplished in dance and gymnastics (unless you are from a small school like I am) but it hasn’t always been this way, these types of routines weren’t added until the 1920s when the University of Minnesota State adding tumbling routines to entertain the crowds. Megaphones weren’t added to sport until the 1900s and the famous pom poms until the late 1950s.
